Book La panthère des neiges (French Edition) Review :

“…sur l’immensité du monde.” Sylvain Tesson was born in Paris. At some point he realized it was a big world out there. France was at the extreme western end of the Eurasian land mass. He has spent a good portion of his life going back east, across the land mass. I’ve gone with him, regrettably, only in the comfort of my armchair. I’ve read “Berezina,” a word that still connotes “disaster” in French today. Tesson rode a Russian motorcycle, the Ural, with a sidecar, and traced Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow on the bicentennial. In “L’Axe du Loup” Tesson traced a route that was never really taken, as it would ultimately be revealed, that of Slavomir Rawicz, a Pole who was captured in World War II, and purportedly escaped the Gulag and walked to the Bay of Bengal. Rawicz peddled his fantasy in the best seller, “The Long Walk.” Tesson on the other hand, really did do it, much of it on foot, sometimes on bike and a few motorized hitches. In “Dans Les Forets de Siberie” he recounts living purportedly alone in a cabin on the shores of Lake Baikal for half a year. Based on the movie of this adventure, it would appear at least a few of his nights were “sweeten,” as Leonard Cohen once sang.My favorite though is his account of staying totally in France, “Sur Les Chemins Noirs.” He needed to overcome some self-inflicted damage (he had fallen, while climbing a wall, when drunk, and seriously injured his back). He decided to facilitate the recovery process by walking across France, south to north, from the border with Italy to the tip of the Cotentin Peninsula, an inspiration I still hope to follow. Thus, I had high expectations when I opened his recently released “La Panthere des Neiges” (The Snow Leopard). And I was not disappointed. Tesson is aware that the English translation of his title is the one used by Peter Matthiessen for his book, first published in 1978 (I reviewed it on Amazon in 2011, giving it 4-stars). Tesson references Matthiessen’s experience a couple of times, noting the snow leopards were just as elusive back then.Tesson is not a patient man. He admits it; rather he prefers motion. But to experience the snow leopard, one needs patience – quietly being on the lookout for hours, and days. Vincent Munier, who lives alone in the forests of the Vosges (a pleasant thought), has the patience. He has been to Tibet six times, photographing them. Tesson is invited to come along, though he literally cannot carry his share of the weight of the backpacks, due to his damaged vertebra.Much of the time they are on the Chang Tang plateau, in western Tibet, at altitudes ranging between 4000 and 5000 meters. It is February, hence the subject 30 C below. Virtually no one lives in this vast space (another pleasant thought, for Tesson as well – the proverbial “elbow room”). “Saa” is the word for snow leopard in Tibetan. It normally hunts yaks and mountain goats, and the occasional Tibetan child who herds the flocks.Tesson’s book is more of his classic style – about half is the actual pursuit of the snow leopard, of which they have four encounters; the other half are his far-ranging ruminations on life. In the former, he admits to having spent a lot of time racing across the steppes, not seeing what is around him, whereas Munier, with his patience, does. How do the Chinese maintain control of Tibet? In the style of Lenin – give them electricity! Tesson discusses how panthers are depicted in paintings, including a bizarrely proportioned one in Jean-Baptiste Corot’s. A key touchstone of French culture, “Recherche” makes an appearance, with Tesson’s claim that Marcel Proust understood the importance of patience and the lookout, as Swann anticipates the vision of Odette de Crecy before ever seeing her (she is the “white panther”). Munier had left school at the age of 17, “but he has read all of Giono.” Tesson stands next to the frozen source of the Mekong River, “… the river of Khmers tears … the 317 sections of the living Buddha … to the delta, where Marguerite had a lover.” Wow! She did indeed, Tesson.Another great read; long may he remain restless, with age tempering it a bit, for time to smell the roses, or spot the elusive leopard, and wonder why it lives at such an elevation (perhaps, as Tesson says, the 5000 remaining ones just want to avoid the billion and a half Chinese). 6-stars.
