Ebook About Step back in time and discover the sights, sounds and smells of London through the ages in this enthralling journey into the capital's rich, teeming and occasionally hazardous past.Let time traveller Dr Matthew Green be your guide to six extraordinary periods in London's history - the ages of Shakespeare, medieval city life, plague, coffee houses, the reign of Victoria and the Blitz. We'll turn back the clock to the time of Shakespeare and visit a savage bull and bear baiting arena on the Bankside. In medieval London, we'll circle the walls as the city lies barricaded under curfew, while spinning further forward in time we'll inhale the 'holy herb' in an early tobacco house, before peering into an open plague pit. In the 18th century, we'll navigate the streets in style with a ride on a sedan chair, and when we land in Victorian London, we'll take a tour of freak-show booths and meet the Elephant Man.You'll meet pornographers and traitors, actors and apothecaries, the mad, bad and dangerous to know, all desperate to show you the thrilling and vibrant history of the world's liveliest city.Book London: A Travel Guide Through Time Review :
I’ve read a fair number of books on English History and my favorite ones have tended to center on life in London during a particular time period. So it is not really I surprise that I enjoyed this book. The thing that makes this one different than the other I’ve read is that it covers multiple time periods instead of just one. Each chapter covers a different year, taking you from modern London back in time to wander around London in 1665 for example. While some might call it more historical fiction than nonfiction it gives the reader a good whiff of what life was like – rendering historical facts in a lively, immediate manner. If you have trouble getting into English History, this is a good way to start. I have not read much modern or contemporary English History, so I was fascinated by the chapter set in 1957. The other thing that I adore about this book is the epilogue of each chapter, which lays out the buildings that still exist, if any, in modern day London from the time period you recently visited. It’s the perfect travel guide for any History nerd. The author writes in 2nd person POV (where the reader -- you -- becomes the main character), giving this history book the feel of a choose-you-own-adventure novel, yet the book is jammed with fascinating facts. He doesn't give you only the expected and ordinary (the Plague, the Great Fire, the Blitz) but slips in a fascinating history of coffee houses (he hates Starbucks), the inventor of the mini-skirt and 60s mod fashion, and the beginnings of mass media on Fleet Street. He has the reader "walk" about London to see the sites, as if on a real walking tour of the city, but he guides his reader through time as well as place. His notes, found in an appendix in the back, are superb, thorough, and nearly as readable as the book itself. This is a good choice for anyone interested in London, England, history, and/or travel.
